The Chemical Peeling and your Skin

The chemical peels are cosmetic treatments which are skin resurfacing procedures that can be done on your face, hands and neck. They are used to improve the appearance of your skin. The top layer of your skin which has got some defects are usually peeled off. The skin that grows back after the peel looks smooth and young. There are a number of reasons that you may go for chemical peeling treatment. Some of the skin conditions that you want to treat are wrinkles and fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, scars, melasma, uneven skin tone or redness.

What a Chemical Peel can do to your skin?
  • It helps in reducing the fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth

  • They help in treating wrinkles caused by sun damage and ageing

  • Improving the appearance of mild scars

  • Treating certain types of acne

  • Reducing age spots, freckles, and dark patches due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills

  • Improving the look and feel of your skin

Areas of skin that are prone to sun damage may improve after chemical peeling. After a chemical peel, the skin is temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so it is better to protect yourselves from the sun.

Are you a good candidate for this procedure?
In general, people who have fair skin with light hairs are better candidates for chemical peels. If you are a person with darker skin, you may also see good results, but depending upon the type of problem being treated. But you might be changed and become uneven after the procedure.

Before You Get a Chemical Peel
As suggested by our doctor, you need to stop taking certain drugs and prepare your skin by using other medications, such as Retin-A, Renova, or glycolic acid before undergoing this procedure. The doctor may also prescribe antibiotics or antiviral drugs. You need to discuss with the doctor to determine the depth of your peel. Depending upon the condition of your skin and goals of the treatment, you need to take a wise decision.

During the Chemical Peeling procedure
  • The chemical peeling procedure can be done in a doctor’s office or in a surgery centre.

  • It's an outpatient procedure with no or minimal downtime.

  • The first step of the procedure is to clean your skin thoroughly.

  • Then one or more chemical solutions such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid are applied to small areas of your skin.

  • During this step, you may feel a burning sensation that lasts about five to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation.

  • Applying ice packs or cool compresses on your skin can help out and provide relief from the stinging sensation.

  • You may also need to take some pain medication during or after a deeper peel.

What To Expect After the Chemical Peel
After treatment, you may need bandages for several days on the skin that was treated. Following this procedure, a sunburn type of reaction begins to happen depending on the type of chemical peel. Then the skin becomes red, followed by scaling that ends in three to seven days. Swelling happens in medium-depth deep peeling procedure where blisters form that may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off over a period of seven to 14 days. You will need to prevent your skin from getting exposed to the sun for several months after a chemical peel procedure since your new skin will be fragile.
